I’ve worked with Chuck for about 20 years. In that time his has consistently proved himself to be one of the most committed, hard working, and principled people I know.
I first got to know Chuck through his work at a community organization in Roxbury. He offered me materials, support, and a meeting place as I worked to bring together a group of Hispanic parents at the Boston Latin School and a group of black parents at the school. He also offered me counsel and advise on how to proceed with these groups. All this he did while asking nothing in return.

My name is Santiago Rivera. I am 19 years old and support chuck turner for alot of reasons. Mr Turner has proved to me that money is not needed to make action. I live on Magnolia st, where there were about 4 car accidents involving children getting hurt. It took me ONE email, for Mr Turner to come by with ISD and our transportation department to solve this issue. Today, we have more stop signs & slow signs on my street, something which has helped alot on my street. THIS IS WHY I STICK WITH TURNER!

News of Chuck Turner’s arrest came to me at 11:30 am on Friday when I walked into my sociology classroom at the small college where I teach. My students hesitated telling me, knowing that I consider Chuck an old and dear friend. They have come to know and like him, too, because in September, he visited my classes as a guest speaker, talking about oppression, movements for social justice, and ways we can re-imagine our thinking for our future in spite of, and because of, a Constitution that was written to serve the needs of white male property owners. My students found him mesmerizing and mainly because here in front of them was an elected public official excited to meet them in a down to earth dialogue about what mattered in their lives; at that time, much of what mattered to them related to the national election, and he eagerly worked with them to refine their thinking and sharpen their analysis.

Chuck Turner is one of two politicians that I have ever trusted. As a public representative and as a private citizen, Chuck’s honesty and integrity are constantly visible. Though I have moved away from Boston, Chuck left a considerable impression on me and continues to influence how I think about social change and government.

I first met Chuck and Reverend Graylan Hagler at a Greater Roxbury Workers Assoc. picket line calling for hiring members of the greater Roxbury community at the Suffolk Construction Co. Job at the Post office in Dudley Sq/, in January 1990. My union was picketing another gate (Suffolk was non-union) and I suported on the spot the demands for hiring black workers, and community workers of all trades on the job site.

I have known Councilor Turner since I was an undergraduate student at UMass Boston (2001). Chuck Turner was the most amazing politician I had ever met, in my entire life, (a title which he still holds to this day). He spoke out for the poor, he was constantly involved in community activities and he would come to any community forum which he was invited to. He seemed to never stop working for his constituents, for his state, for his country and for his world.

It was in 1999, as a young Priest working with the Cape Verdean Community in the greater Boston area, when Mr. Chuck Turner was running to become our second man of color as City Councilor. He came one Saturday evening to our Church Saint Martin De Porres on Cushing Avenue in Uphams Corner about his intentions to run for the Council seat. As he walked in the Sanctuary, I saw a great man of deep Spirituality and Honesty. I saw a Black Moses walking towards us, by announcing his goals and Mission as our future city councilor. After that brief presentation, I started to follow his footsteps and his philosophy of life, which I can say loudly and proudly “Living for the Others”. Chuck answered all the needs of our communities. He went far to teach others around the Nation and the World what it means to “Live for Others”. He became a teacher, a friend, and a councilor for me as I learned to navigate the City of Boston.
