Missing in Action? Not in District 7!
January 5th, 2009 | Category: pressA recent Boston Globe article asks if the local NAACP has been missing in action when it comes to many important issues. If only the Globe actually took the time to look at what is actually going on in the community. This theme is picked up by Laura Jennings-Cranford and Richard Cranford in their reply sent to the Globe:
“In regard to your NAACP MIA article in today’s paper, perhaps you’re looking in the wrong place for activism in Boston’s black community. Have either you or John Drake ever been to one of Chuck Turner’s monthly community meetings or been inside his district office? We assure you that you would see plenty of activism there, and by the 100 plus people who are usually in attendance at these meetings. No other politician in Massachusetts has done this.
“Another thing: The juxtaposition of Obama’s win and Chuck Turner’s troubles makes us wonder if “uppity black men” are being targeted early enough so they won’t cause any more trouble by getting elected to high office.
“Why don’t you go on the premise that Chuck Turner is innocent of the charges against him, and see where that takes you for a story? The U.S. attorney who has filed this complaint against Mr. Turner will be out of office in January when the new administration begins. It seems to us that he has managed to ruin a good man’s reputation with a very messy complaint, and maybe that is the whole point of all this. The FBI in Boston has not been a paragon of virtue. And then there’s the Bush administration.
“Trial by media” is really not a fair way to convict someone, is it? We always thought it was “innocent until proven guilty.”
